Week 12...

I found the teacher librarian role the most interesting. I think one day I would like to try this role. I really like it because I would still be able to work in a school and get to know students. I would be able to work with teachers to create meaningful learning experiences. I also observed Jeremie Knutson who is a technology coach at Ames Middle School. I thought this job position was interesting as well. It was fun because he got to collaborate with teachers and his day was never the same. Jeremie was also in charge of teaching how to integrate technology into the classroom to his fellow teachers. I think this would be fun to do and interesting to see the growth of each teacher.


One theme I saw while watching the videos was that a lot of them started as classroom teachers. They then started taking classes or just fell into the technology positions. I also found that a lot of school are using chromebooks. I really enjoy chromebooks and their abilities so this was interesting to me. I think it is interesting that Apple has not really stepped up and found ways to make their devices education friendly.

I learned about what the Google App Certified teacher program is. You can become a trainer and teacher about Google Apps. The Google Apps for education is a program where educators can train and become certified to show they understand the content and are willing to share about that information.

IGNITE

The IGNITE presentations were a little bit more stressful then I would have liked them to be. I did not like that we only got 20 seconds on each slide. I felt like I had so much more to say. However, I did learn that it was somewhat easy to talk about something I was passionate about. After listening to my classmates, I came to a conclusion that we are all kind of on the same path. It felt like a whole new generation of ideas and philosophies were being created from my Iowa State classmates. I think I would have added a few things to my teaching philosophy after listening to my peers. One huge thing that I am a firm believer in is creating a community within the classroom. If I could do my presentation over I would definitely add that in. Another thing I would add in is creating a safe place for my students. I want my students to feel at home and safe in my classroom. I want my students to know that I am accepting of all of them.

One huge thing I learned from this class was about being a connected teacher. I really enjoyed learning about how to be a connected teacher through blogging and social media. I think this is the future for teaching. I love the idea of connecting with educators across the world through blogging and social media. I think this is a great way to become a better educator! I want to create a blog when I am a teacher. In this blog I was to share things I am doing in the classroom and reflect on my lessons. This helps me become connected and a reflective teacher.

Tech Review Presentations...


For my tech review presentation, I decided to present the ReadWriteThink Timeline tool. Preparing for this presentation I was excited to tell my classmates about this tool. I think when a lot of people first saw my tool they did not think much of it.It was not until I explained why I chose that tool that they took another look at it. I think my explanation of the classroom idea is what changed their minds that it is in fact a good tool. I also think that when I explained that I chose it because it would be a good tool for younger students they understood why I liked the simplicity of the tool. Some things I would do differently would be to go into more detail about how it fits into 3 levels of the SAMR model. I also would want to maybe include one of my own timelines to show another example. One other thing would be to add in pictures to entertain my audience a little bit! I enjoyed learning about all the different tools that my classmates presented. These short presentations could be a huge success in a school. If one teacher from each grade researched a tool and then did a short presentation to the staff every few months, teachers could learn a lot. I know I learned a lot by listening to each presentation.

Social Media...

This week I learned a few things about Twitter I didn’t know. I learned about twitter chats by watching one live. I learned that their are different twitter chats for thing such as education, business, technology, medicine, sports, and many other things. Watching this Twitter chat was really interesting and I think I would participate in them in the future. They are a great way to gather information, resources, and inspiration. I also learned that you can create lists. These “lists” can be organized so that certain people can be viewed on your feed. For example, if I wanted to create a list of educators I could create one of those I have followed and then when I go to that list I can see only their tweets.


I decided to watch the #txeduchat. This chat was comprised of six questions and is hosted by @VealHeidi.The first thing for the educators to do was to introduce themselves. To do this they were to describe themselves in three words. Then they got started on their discussion about being an empowered teacher. The first question asked was to define empowered educator in your own words. Question two asked why teacher empowerment is critical to the success of your students. The next question asked, in what ways do empowered teachers and educators approach growth differently? The fourth question asked, how do school leaders go about equipping educators in a way that leads to authentic empowerment? Question five asked, what are the most invigorating things about being an empowered teacher or about empowering others? The last question asked, what are the best solutions to combat educators who resist empowerment and choose status quo? I think this topic was chosen to remind educators to be empowered educators and to instil empowerment onto their students and fellow educators.


A few tips I would give to a teacher new to social networking is to first become familiar with that social network. Then I would encourage the teacher to not be passive. I would encourage that teacher to not just read their posts, but to reflect and comment back. Commenting back can be a great way to reach out to other professionals and create new relationships. I would then recommend for the teacher to follow fellow educators, resources, top educators or roles models, and book authors.


When deciding who I would follow on twitter, I looked at the Twitter 101 for Teachers lists of people to follow. I followed @edudemic because this page talks about using technology to enhance learning. This way I can be updated on new technologies and using them in the classroom. I also followed @TED_ED because I love watching TED talks. I thought they would be a good twitter page to follow. They have some really fun articles to read. I then followed a couple of teachers. I followed @JulieDRamsay becuase I saw that she is an author and she strives for student-directed learning. I also followed @RobinDubiel because the she seems well connected with other educators and she shared great articles. In the past I have followed educators I have worked with as well. I follow Adam Nidey @Mrnidey, a teacher in waukee, he likes to tweet about things he is doing in the classroom. I enjoy his account because he uses a lot of technology in the classroom and creative thinking. I also follow a fellow co-worker, Kyle Coppola @cvtigersKA. I enjoy his twitter account because he often tweets about what he is doing in the classroom and tweets about his activities he does with the students.

Tech Review #2

The tool I decided to review is the 3D printer. The 3D printer a new and exciting tool that has become widely used. The 3D printer was named the machine of the year by Time magazine because of the amazing products that have been made. Education has been attempting to use the 3D printer in the classroom by creating student friendly printers. In the CTLT at Iowa State University they have invested in two MakerBot printers for educators to use. To use the 3D printer you must design what you want to create first. To do this you could use Tinkercad (a free designing website) or a different designing website or program. I have used Tinkercad before and I liked using it because it was simple and students could easily use it. Once you have your design ready you must download it to the app MakerBot onto your computer. Once you save it onto a flash drive in the correct format, you can begin printing your design. The product will be made of “filament” which is kind of like a plastic material. To use this tool in the classroom requires a lot of work and technological knowledge. For this tool to be productive the school’s environment needs to be able to support the tool and the materials used. So in saying that, this tool is not necessarily easily accessible and useable for schools.

Substitution: One idea I had that the 3D printer could be used for is to allow students to print out an imaginary creature. For this lesson I would have students create a story or a comic. In this story, students would have to create a character. This character could be a simple human or a crazy creature they have thought of. Instead of having students draw their creature or create it from clay, the students could design their creature using Tinkercad and then 3D print their creatures. If supplies are not available to print a creature for every student I would make the writing a competition and whoever has the best story would get to print their creature. I could even do this once a month to engage students to be creating stories on their own.

Modification: Instead of having students create something for themselves using the 3D printer I would have the students design and create something they could sell to other people. Students would create an object they could use that will benefit them and other people to make something easier. Some example might be a charger holder, key chain holder, book mark, or a water bottle holder. The idea is that the students are creating something of their own to make something that will benefit people. The students would create something and then attempt to sell it to other students. The students would have to create visuals as advertisements, selling points, pricing, and use persuasive talk. The teacher would host a night were the students could try and talk other students into buying their items and parents could come along as well. The buying process could be done with paper money.

Redefinition: One way I thought the 3D printer could be used to fulfill this level is by having the students create something to help people in need. As the teacher I would inform the students on issues that can be helped by creating something from the 3D printer. The students would have to research their issue and think of things they could design that could potentially help those in need. This would be a great way to give back to the community or even people beyond the community.

Connected Teacher

Reading the article Professor Alec Couros: "The Connected Teacher" really opened my eyes as to what social media can bring to me as an educator. The first sentence of this blog really moved me, “One powerful benefit of networked learning is that when you find something interesting, it often leads to someone interesting - and that someone often leads to an entire networks of interesting people”. To me this is exactly what being a connected teacher is. It’s finding valuable resources online that you can follow and then finding even more based on those primary people. The online world offers great connections and resources for educators. It is just up to the educator to use these resources to better themselves as teachers.  


After reading a few blog posts from Kristina Peter's blog  I also learned how important it is to reflect. Reflection is key to learning. To be a connected teacher, you should be reaching out and following people on social media but you should also be collaborating and commenting as well. Being a connected teacher means that you are creating conversation and collaborating with people. This could be done by simply leaving a comment on someone’s blog post or asking questions on twitter. I think I would enjoy creating a blog to reflect on my findings as an educator.


Using social media to enhance your teaching is a wonderful experience. As a college student, I have begun following teachers on twitter. I love scrolling through my twitter feed and seeing all these great ideas being done by teachers in Iowa. PLN is a great way to get connected with other teachers and broaden your ideas. You are able to learn about new things and be able to do new things in your classroom. Constantly broadening your mind and ideas are key to being a great teacher and PLN is a great way to do that.


When I googled “how to be a connected teacher” endless amounts of article came up. I decided to click on the first one that was titled 5 Tips for New Teachers to Become Connected Educators . I decided it would be a credible source because it is from edutopia and was created by educational consultant. Here is a list of the 5 tips she explains
  1. Be able to define what it means to be a connected educator
  2. Be knowledgeable about web 2.0
  3. Be willing to join social media network
  4. Become and blogger
  5. Be reflective and reach out
I liked this article because it was straight to the point and she does not necessarily define everything. She provides resources to look at to define what a connected educator is and to figure out how what web 2.0 is. She does not just give you an answer, you have to do a little digging and I think I learned a lot more because of that.

Speed Geeking

Exploring the different resources during class was a fun experience. I really enjoyed getting experience with all the different kinds of technology. Some of my favorite things I explored were the sphero, osmos tangram, numbers, and words, chromebook, squishy circuits, LittleBits, and Makey Makey. My top three favorite things were the sphero, LittleBits, and Makey Makey. I have played with the sphero before and I just loved the coding aspect of it. Students can learn so many different things with the Sphero. My second favorite thing was the LittleBits. I loved playing with these because I plan to teach younger students and I could see myself using these in my classroom. They are magnetized circuit makers that younger students are able to use to understand circuits. My third favorite thing would be the Makey Makey set. This is another circuit maker that allows students to be very creative with what they are making. I love that Makey Makey can be hooked up to almost anything and can be made into anything. A few things I did not like as much was the Smart Kapp board and Arduino. I just did not see much of a use for the Smart Kapp board and it was very touchy when I used it. With the Arduino, I guess I did not really know how to use it and it was very advanced. I could see myself using that technology in a high school or middle school setting. Since I am wanting to teach the younger grades I just do not see myself using this.

My 21st Century Classroom...

I think the most important thing to think about when designing a digital classroom is creating ways to make collaboration happen. Collaboration in a classroom where students are seated alone and not able to communicate easily is obviously not going to work. So when I thought about designing my 21st century classroom, I imagined places where students can work together to create new things. I think working in groups is incredibly important. Having the desks in pods would be a great way to fulfill the need for collaboration. Another thing I think is important is to have other seating (bean bag chairs, carpet areas, moveable chairs, places to hide out) to create a moveable and cozy classroom. Students should be able to move around the classroom and still be productive.


Along with collaboration accessibility, the main things I thought about in my classroom, is opportunities to create. By this I mean, that students should have access to a variety of tools in the classroom to create meaningful learning experiences. I hope to have chromebooks for each student to use in the classroom and at home. I think this would make learning more accessible and allow for students to become familiar with having their own device. With the chromebooks, I would find a projector and reliable internet access necessary in my classroom. One thing that I did not find necessary was an interactive whiteboard. I do not have a lot of experience with interactive whiteboards but from what I seen, they are not necessary in a classroom. Maybe as I learn more about interactive whiteboard my opinion might change. As I learn and grow as an educator my vision of a 21st century classroom will also grow.

Tech Review #1

The tool I decided to review is the ReadWriteThink timeline tool. The tool can be located by clicking on this link: ReadWriteThink timeline tool. The tool’s purpose is to create a digital timeline. This is a free online tool that you can access through any kind of internet browser. I like this timeline tool because you can easily save your work. It is very easy to use and you don’t have to make an account to use it. Students can download their final work and share with the teacher as well. To use this tool you simply enter your name and the project title to get started. Once you have done this, you are able to start creating your timeline. To create a “date” you simply click on the timeline and add in the information you want in the box provided. You can also add in photos if you would like. If you want to delete something you can just drag it up to the trash can on the upper left corner. This online timeline tool is fairly easy to use and very kid friendly. The other online timeline tools I looked at were too detailed and students would have to create an account to create one. This tool could be used for things other than timelines as well.

Substitution:
This tool could easily replace a simple written timeline. The students could easily create their own timeline about a historic event. For example, if the students were asked to create a timeline on the revolutionary war, they could easily substitute creating a timeline on paper to a digital timeline.  
Modification: Instead of using this tool to create a standard timeline, they could create a storyboard on a book they have read. This lesson could be used in a 3rd grade and beyond classroom. For example, if we were reading story as a whole class, the students could create a storyboard of what happened in the book. They then could share their timelines with other students. Each students timelines would look different because it would be up to the students to include what they thought was important to include in the timeline.
Redefinition: This tool could be used to create a timeline of the seasons of the year. This lesson could be used in a 1st grade classroom. We then could compare the timelines to other classes timeline who lives in another state who has different seasons and weather as us in Iowa. I think it would be really cool to compare seasons with people who are close and far away, far away meaning, out of country! I think this tool could be used to even compare different cultural norms, such as eating times and what we eat.

ISTE Standards for Students

My first impressions of the new ISTE standards were that they were a lot more detailed. Once I started reading the standards I caught myself shaking my head in approval. In class, when we were doing the activity were we had to compare the two ISTE standards, I found myself liking the new standards more and more. The old ISTE standards seemed out of date and focused on only using technology and not growing as a person. I think the new ISTE standards really make it a point that the students should use technology not just for their purposes but to use technology to allow your student to grow, learn, and become a better citizen. I think the new ISTE standards are also more relevant to working on skills that the students will use in the real world. As a future teacher I I would prefer to use the new ISTE standards because they are easier to understand and they are much more detailed. I also really like what the new standards focus on and I believe they are much more relevant for students today. Below are my ratings of the new ISTE standards.
  1. Empowered Learner ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • I gave this standard a five start rating because I think this standard does a great job at allowing the students to be in charge of their learning. I think it is great that the students would be almost in charge of their own learning goals and using digital tools to reflect, plan, and meet those goals. One recommendation I have is to maybe have the students become a leader in someway. Maybe the students must present what they have learned and teach some else how to do something.
  2. Knowledge Constructor ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • This standard is very similar to the old ISTE standard number three. I think this standard is important to include because students will be gathering information from digital tools very frequently. I gave this standard a four star rating because it is so similar to the old ISTE standard. I was hoping to find something more in the new ISTE standards. One recommendation I have is to create a standard that focuses on citing sources and giving credit when needed.
  3. Innovative Designer/maker ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • I really like this standard because it focuses on using the technology beyond its original purpose. The students are focusing on creating, inventing, and utilizing digital tools. I really like the last standard because it focuses on perseverance and working through failure. This is an important skill in all subject areas and in life in general. One recommendation I have is to create a standard that has the students reflect on their journey of creating or inventing. 
  4. Computational Thinker ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • I gave this standard a rating of four because it is a good standard. I think having the students learn how to solve a problem with digital tools is very important. In their generation, their world revolves around technology and it's important for them to be able to solve authentic problems with the use of digital tools. One recommendation I have for this standard is for it to get rid of the second standard (b). This standard is already addressed under the knowledge constructor standards. The only part that is different is that they are finding patterns within the data. So maybe create a standard that focuses just on finding patterns. 
  5. Creative communicator/Creative learner/Creator and communicator ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • First, they should really decide on a name for this standard. I think they should pick Creative communicator. I like this standard because it focuses on the students expressing ideas through digital tools. Digital tools allow for creative ideas to come to life. One recommendation I have is to create a standard that focuses on reflecting and learning from their experiences. 
  6. Global Collaborator ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • I think this standard is great. I love that it focuses not only collaborating but it focuses on solving issues and looking at the multiple viewpoints of other people. Learning how to be a team and sharing work equally is hard so I like that this standard focuses on that. I also really like that it has a standard just about learning and collaborating with others globally to understand their culture. One recommendation I have is to change the name. I don't like that is Global Collaborator because this standard does not just focus on collaborating globally. Maybe change it to something like Collaboratively Learning or Collaborative Learner 
  7. Digital Citizen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
    • I like this standard because it is extremely relevant to students. Students need to understand the rules of technology. I think one recommendation I have for this standard is to create a standard that focuses on students realizing and reflecting on the positive and negative effects of technology. 

I like... the detail of each standard and what the standards stand for.

I wish... that some of the standards had ideas related to reflection. 

I wonder... how other teachers are implementing these standards into the classroom.

SAMR...

The SAMR model does a great job at simplifying what level your teaching is at. As a teacher I think it is important to “teach above the line” when teaching. I think it is important that if you are going to use technology, that you use it in a way that is meaningful and purposeful. Realistically, you are not always going to “teach above the line” but it is important that you are using technology in a meaningful way. I like the SAMR model because it allows for teachers to evaluate their teaching and see which level they are at. They can then reflect about their lesson and think of ways to make it better. The SAMR model doesn't want you to choose your technology first but it shows that your technology should be used in a new and meaningful way. It is related to the Grounded Integration approach because you are not creating a lesson plan around a technology, instead you are choosing a technology that  will help guide your students to a better understanding.


I evaluated the Arizona Technology Integration Matrix (TIM). I thought this model was very detailed and had the same idea as the SAMR model. I like that this model provided two lesson plans in each cell to show you what a lesson would look like at that level. I think the biggest differences is that the TIM model did provided those lesson plans which allowed for teachers to see the model in effect. In my opinion, the SAMR model is easier to understand and to use. For me, when I am lesson planning I think I would use the SAMR model to see where my lesson is at and then see how I can improve it. These frameworks both have one goal in common. They are trying to get to that center piece of the TPACK model. These models are trying to help guide teachers to successfully achieve the TPACK model.

Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge...


As a future teacher I think it is immensely important to understand what the TPACK framework consists of. The article, “
What is Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge?”, really goes into detail about what each section entails. Every teacher should have an idea of what content is needed to be taught and how to teach it. What gets tricky is thinking of ways to build students understanding with technology. In the article, “Too Cool for School? No way!”, it talks about how using technology doesn't necessarily mean using technology made for educators. This is a great example of implementing the TPACK framework into your classroom. These teachers had extensive knowledge of the technology they were using and understood how to teach the content and technology.    


As for me, I think my strongest areas in the TPACK framework is the technology bubble. As a freshman here at ISU I decided to go for the Learning Technologies Minor. Since then, my knowledge of technology has grown and grows everyday. One great experience of learning about technology was working at the ITEC convention this past year. I learned about many different kinds of technology and how to implement them in your classroom. I am still learning about teaching methods and the necessary content areas for each grade and age. I am currently in my block one classes so I am learning about how to teach reading, writing, and math. These classes are allowing me to grow in the pedagogy and content bubbles of the TPACK framework.

What I would like to learn...

In this class I hope to learn about many things. In my past classes here at Iowa State I have learned a little bit about TPACK and NETS. However, I would like to refresh on those ideas and go a little bit more in depth about them. I also would like to learn about more technologies to use in the classroom. Specifically I want to learn more about choosing which technology is the best for certain activities. In the past, I have kind of just stuck with what I know regarding technology when writing lesson plans. In this class I want to discover new technologies and be able to use  them to their full potential.


Another big thing I want to learn about is using social media in the classroom. I have read about using blogs and twitter in the classroom and I want to know how that would actually work. I want to practice more with blogs since I have only used them a couple of times. I want to create a blog for my classroom to allow parents to see what we are doing and for students to be able to communicate with each other. Blogs in classrooms are a great way to create a community within the classroom. With social media, I also want to learn how to use it professionally. I want to be able to share what I am doing in the classroom and I also want to be able to follow others. I hope to grow as an educator in this class through learning about all these things and more.

This past semester I was at practicum in the Ames Middle School observing their instructional coach, Jeremie Knutson. During this experience I learned a lot about what he does and how he helps integrate technology into the classroom and school. The biggest thing I got out of this experience was looking at what he does as an employer. I have thought about becoming an instructional coach since this practicum experience. I hope this class can help me make decisions about what I would like to do in the future. I have always wanted to be a classroom teacher but I am open minded to trying something new as well. 

A little about me...

My name is Ashley Yap and I am a Junior at Iowa State University. I am currently achieving an elementary education major and the learning technologies minor. Along with my major I am gaining a reading and social studies endorsement. I am hoping to become a classroom teacher but I have thought about becoming an instructional coach as well. I would love to teach the lower grades but I am open minded about trying any grade! In my classroom I hope to teach students to always be themselves. It is so important for each student to feel valued for who they are and I hope to achieve that. I want each of my students to feel safe and confident in my classroom. Which is where the really cute picture of the giraffe comes into play :).
